Avoid Choice Van Lines — A Complete Lack of Accountability

Read More I strongly recommend staying away from Choice Van Lines. Our experience has been a complete mess from the beginning, and our move is not even finished yet. For anyone who doesn’t want to read the entire review, here are the five biggest issues: * We spent roughly 2 hours on the phone measuring and reviewing our belongings with Choice Van Lines, were quoted about 290 cubic feet, then were told at pickup we needed approximately 500 cubic feet. * Choice dispatched We Haul Moving Services (U.S. DOT #3918815), whose communication with us was extremely rude and who arrived around 6:40 PM, after our pickup window, leaving us unable to get meaningful assistance from Choice while dealing with a huge increase in space and cost. * We paid extra for our TV to be properly boxed, but it was never boxed and was instead wrapped in moving blankets. * We were pressured to proceed with loading while being told we had 30 days of storage included. We were later told the storage arrangement would not be honored as we understood it, despite our written communications about our September 9 availability. We ultimately had to secure storage ourselves. * Before pickup, they would call every number on file 5–8 times in a row. Once our belongings were picked up and we actually needed help, communication essentially disappeared. A promised supervisor call never happened, and we’ve now gone over a week without a meaningful response. Before the move, we spent approximately two hours on the phone with Choice Van Lines going through our belongings in detail. We measured items, provided dimensions, and reviewed our inventory specifically so they could give us an accurate estimate. After all of that, we were quoted approximately 290 cubic feet. When the movers actually arrived, we were told our belongings required approximately 500 cubic feet. That is an enormous difference. We did not simply give Choice a vague estimate of what we owned. We spent approximately two hours actively measuring belongings and reviewing the inventory with them. Despite that, once the movers were at our home and the move was underway, the amount of space we supposedly needed jumped from approximately 290 to 500 cubic feet, with a substantial increase in cost. Choice Van Lines did not actually perform our move. They dispatched We Haul Moving Services, 455 Fairway Drive, Deerfield Beach, Florida 33441, U.S. DOT #3918815, to physically handle our belongings. Our experience dealing with We Haul was awful. The communication was extremely rude, and the packing list they were working from did not correctly reflect the updates we had previously made. Instead of having a straightforward pickup based on the information we had spent so much time providing, we were left dealing with discrepancies while being pushed to proceed with loading. The movers did not arrive until approximately 6:40 PM, despite our scheduled pickup window ending at 6:00 PM. That timing made the situation even worse because when the approximately 290-to-500-cubic-foot discrepancy came up, we could not get meaningful assistance from Choice Van Lines. We were standing there with a third-party moving company, our belongings being loaded, a substantially higher space requirement and cost being presented to us, and no meaningful support from the company we had actually booked the move through. We were repeatedly told that we needed to proceed with loading. At the same time, storage was discussed with us as being included for up to 30 days, which was extremely important because our new apartment would not be available until September 9. We relied on what we were being told and proceeded with the move. Then the storage situation became another mess. We explicitly told Choice Van Lines in writing that we could not accept delivery until September 9. Choice responded in writing that they would notify dispatch. We then specifically asked Choice to confirm that dispatch had received the information. Choice responded: “I can confirm that they already acknowledged my email.” Despite that written confirmation, we later learned the situation had not been handled as represented, and we were told the storage arrangement would not work the way we had been led to believe. At that point, we were left dealing with the consequences of conflicting information between Choice Van Lines and the third-party carrier they dispatched. We ultimately had to secure our own storage and make our own arrangements. The TV situation is another example. We paid extra specifically to have our television properly boxed. It was not boxed. It was wrapped in moving blankets. The communication before versus after pickup has also been ridiculous. Before our belongings were picked up, they would call every phone number they had on file repeatedly—sometimes 5–8 times in a row—trying to reach us. Once pickup was confirmed and they had our belongings, that urgency disappeared. When we actually needed help with serious problems involving our move, getting someone to meaningfully respond became nearly impossible. We called. We emailed. We followed up repeatedly. Eventually, a representative took our phone number and told us a supervisor would call. That supervisor never called. It has now been over a week without the promised supervisor contact or any meaningful resolution. We have essentially been left on read while our belongings are still in someone else’s possession. And somehow this experience still isn’t over. We have not received and inspected our belongings yet. We do not even know whether everything will actually arrive or what condition it will be in. Until we physically receive and inventory everything, we cannot know the full extent of the problems with this move. What makes this experience so infuriating is that we tried to do everything correctly. We spent hours providing measurements. We updated our packing list. We documented our September 9 availability in writing. We specifically asked Choice to confirm that dispatch received it. We repeatedly contacted them when problems arose. We even waited for the supervisor callback they promised us. Yet we have still been left dealing with the consequences ourselves. Based on our experience, I would never use Choice Van Lines again. I also strongly recommend that anyone considering them understand that Choice may dispatch a separate company to physically perform your move. In our case, that company was We Haul Moving Services, U.S. DOT #3918815, and dealing with the broker/carrier arrangement when something went wrong was an absolute nightmare. I will update this review once our belongings are finally delivered and we can determine whether everything actually arrived and whether anything was damaged.
